3 Minute Wonder: Research - Logistics and Guidelines

FILMING IN PUBLIC IN THE UK

There aren't any explicit laws against filming in public in the UK, in general one or two-man teams should be okay to film, but more often than not (especially with large crews) clearance will have to be obtained through local authorities applicable to that particular area.

LIBEL OR DEFAMATION

For the topic of my documentary I don't think that libel is going to be a huge issue; after all it is just exploring a condition. Since my involvement as a filmmaker will be almost entirely visual, then it is difficult to say anything entirely untrue about someone.

THE OFCOM BROADCASTING CODE

Having combed through the regulations of the code, there is nothing that particularly applies to my documentary other than potentially misleading the audience, which is something that I will have to make sure not to do.

CHANNEL 4'S VIEWER TRUST GUIDELINES

The Viewer Trust guidelines build upon the OFCOM Broadcasting Code, but with more emphasis on potential misleading of the viewer. It strongly encourages programme producers to make sure that everything is represented at total face value in a factual programme, and that nothing is 'reconstructed' for the camera without explicit mention of said action etc.
