BBC Script Analysis - Character Introduction
This is one of the first scenes from recent BBC drama Happy Valley, where we are introduced to the main character, Catherine Cawood. There is very little inner presence in her introduction in this scene, aside from slight hints here and there ('unassailably pleasant'), so most of her exposition and introduction is through outer presence and context.
Before we even see Catherine we see the flashing lights of a police car outside the newsagent's. From this one can probably assume that she is a police officer, coupled with the fact that she walks in wearing full uniform and equipment. This is context.
We see that there is 'something calm, reassuring and feminine about her manner' which is a case of outer presence, along with her 'striking no-nonsense appearance'.
